LETTER: NAFTA: Stakes could not be higher for Iowans

As the largest exporter of soybeans, pork, corn, feeds, fodder and processed grain products, Iowans have a lot to gain from trade deals that put their families first.

Since its inauguration, no deal has done more to empower Iowa industries than the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). It supports over 138,000 jobs in the state and accounts for over $6.2 billion in Iowa exports. With the Trump administration in the process of renegotiating trade deals, the stakes could not be higher for hard-working Iowans.

Among the 1,700 pages in the agreement, no provision does more to protect Iowa businesses than the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS). It is a neutral, international arbitration procedure that ensures that when companies invest abroad, they can seek protections for their investments when they do not have access to developed and independent court systems.
